Hackney Council have announced Amhurst Road will re-open later tonight Tuesday 26 November, to pedestrians, but will remain closed to traffic until early next week as work on unsafe buildings continues.

Hand demolition began on 5 Amhurst Road to ensure no further damage is caused to the terrace and to allow for the retrieval of residents’ personal belongings.

On Friday residents first became aware of cracks in the Victorian building and became sufficiently alarmed when a window cracked prompting them to alert the authorities.

The council released the following statement: “Hackney Council’s priorities are the safety of the general public and the welfare of the occupants of 1-5 Amhurst Road. The Council is working with affected businesses to find them alternative premises.

“The road will be closed to traffic in both directions between Mare Street and Pembury Junction while safety scaffolding is in place.

“Buses are currently running on diversion with the recently pedestrianised Narrow Way temporarily re-opened as a bus route.

“Hackney Central Overground station will continue to be accessed from the North through the station car park”.
