The future of a Shoreditch night spot is in doubt following the arrest of two men linked with it. The pair were arrested and bailed on the 13th June for an offence under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Police are tight lipped about what the offences are, but a notice  left on the door,  state that the two men were arrested under the Proceeds of Crime Act following a joint operation by Hackney Police’s Money Laundering Team and Licensing Unit.

A police spokes person told Hackney Hive: “It is not appropriate to comment further on this case”.

Explaining further, the spokesperson said: “In light of those arrests, Hackney Licensing Unit applied for an expedited review against East Village Nightclub. We requested a closure order pending the full review on the basis that the venue was undermining the licensing objective of ‘prevention of crime and disorder’.  Further details will be available after the full hearing”.

One local paper has already linked the alleged proceeds, to prostitution and running of a brothel.

Police have cited numerous incidents during a six month investigation including four instances of actual bodily harm,  two of grievous bodily harm which have included a person losing an eye, a bouncer’s jaw being broken as well as 44 incidents of theft at the club being reported.

Police also say plain clothed police officers were able to get through security, despite carrying weapons and underage police cadets sent to East Village, were allowed in and served alcohol unchallenged.

The clubs closure appears to have caught many by surprise, which lead DJ’s, promoters and club goers to comment on East Villages  Facebook.  The clubs Facebook  administrator posted the following:

Hi everyone, thanks for the notes. We are still in a bit of shock about it and not really much information to add at present. All those involved in making the club what it is, with great music, artists and parties are completely gutted with the current situation. We hope this is not something that will last a long time for everyones sake, both inside the club and everyone that comes down and makes us special. We will keep everyone up to date with information as and when we can offer it and like I said, we hope to be back in action sooner rather than later!

About Remi

Remi Hackney Hive founder, publisher and contributor. Hackneyite and all round Girl Friday who couldn't wait to leave Hackney and London behind her. After hitching her wagon in California, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana for 18 years, with a brief spell in Mexico, the prodigal daughter returned to London, happy to put an unconventional and risqué past behind her. It sometimes feels like she’s still at war with herself. This often leads her into a whole lot of trouble, although it’s fair to blame it on some of her best qualities: intelligence, original thinking, willingness to take risks, skepticism, rebelliousness, independence, and creativity. But you know what, much of the trouble she gets into is because she can’t help pointing out that the emperor is naked. Remi still lives by her own rules, nobody else’s. She is owned by her two dogs Deffer(a Jack Russell ) Darcy (a Jack Russell/Pomeranian mix now deceased but can’t remove their names) and two Black cats she adopted December 2021, Desmond and Tutu. She is proprietor of London’s finest and long established pet sitting service. The big smoke is home for the moment, but she desperately yearns wide open spaces, where she hopes to call home in the near future.
