Stoke Newington resident and adventurer Dwayne Fields, is heading back to one of the most inhospitable corners of the earth – Antarctica.
In 2010 Dwayne became the first black Brit to trek from the most northern point of Canada to the magnetic North Pole, covering over 400 miles in 22 days (of which 16 days was a race) across snow and frozen ocean, when he competed in the Peary and Hansen Race with an organization called the Polar Challenge. He raised over £1000 for charity.
On the Tuesday 9th of October, he will be launching his “Buy a Mile’ campaign at the Society Club in Soho, allowing you to take a real part in his journey. There are some 11,000 miles between London and the South Pole and as a ‘Polar Donor’ sponsor, you will be able to buy miles along each stage of the journey and help him raise funds for his chosen charities Noah’s Ark (the children’s hospice) and the Afro-Caribbean Leukemia Trust.
Items such as T shirts, framed pictures etc and an auction which includes a weeks stay at a Scottish Chieftains cottage on the Isle of Mull, Inner Hebrides, signed photos of Patti Smith by Lee Black Childers, Elvis Costello by Paul Spencer and a raffle for a bottle of Duval Le Roy Premier Cru Champagne are just a few things on offer.
Look out for Dwayne’s appearance on BBC’s Daily Politics Show on Wednesday 17 October and watch his recent appearance on BBC Breakfast .
