Regents Canal torso identified as Gemma McCluskie

Police have positively identified the torso pulled from the Broadway Market end of Regents Canal on Tuesday 6 March to be missing Gemma McCluskie.

The 29 year old, one time East End actress was reported missing to police two days after she was last seen on Thursday 1st March. On Tuesday 6 March a member of the public reported a suspicious object floating in the Regent’s Canal close to the Broadway Market.

Officers are now keen to trace Gemma McCluskie’s last known movements before her murder. They are aware that she attended the opening of the new Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel on Thursday 1 March at 11:30 am.  She was pictured at the event wearing a yellow long-sleeved top with a round neck and navy-blue leggings. She was also carrying a Louis Vuitton bag with beige handles and brown-coloured end panels.

Gemma is thought to have been carrying her blackberry mobile phone which had a white phone case, which have not been recovered yet.

CCTV images of her at the opening of the new Hospital have been released as detectives attempt to trace her last known movements before her murder.

Detective Superintendent Fiona Mallon, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said:  “It is important that we piece together Gemma’s movements from Wednesday 29 February until the discovery in Regent’s Canal in Hackney on Tuesday 6 March. We also urge anyone with any significant information about this case to contact us as soon as possible. In particular we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around her home address in Pelter Street in Bethnal Green”

Between 2000 and 2001,  Gemma had a re-accuring role in EastEnders,  as Kerry Skinner.

A 35 year old man thought to be Gemma’s brother,  Tony McCluskie, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning and is still in police custody.
