The former Treasury minister, was holding a his first political surgery, at the Beckton Globe Library, in his Newham constituency, when he was attacked. He is being treated for non life threatening injuries at a hospital. A 21 year old woman has been arrested.
He was talking to the woman when she leant over and stabbed him. According to a source, Mr Timms was stabbed twice in the abdomen.
A Newham Council spokesperson said: “Part of being a political representative is about being accessible and holding surgeries in community locations.
“You cannot vet people who attend such surgeries. We have security at this centre but will review arrangements in light of this incident.”
Mr Timms, is said to be in stable condition, in good spirits and has received visitors.
