Surface is a unique, two-week event situated in the creative hub of Hackney. Not only is this ice skating experience different to any other, with advance tickets starting from £4.40 (including booking fee) it’s the most affordable outdoor rink in London. The rink is covered, so can be enjoyed rain or shine.
The video projection design is by Douglas O’Connell; primarily a designer for theatre and performance, this distinctive visual aspect of the event promises to be engaging for all ages. Founder of Motion Media, O’Connell’s practice has been presented in India, China, the US and the UK with recent video credits including Mozart and Son: Benefit Gala (Royal Opera House) and Dance Marathon (Barbican Theatre).
Presented in association with London Borough of Hackney, families from seven local primary schools will be invited to skate free of charge and discounted tickets will be primarily available to the local community. The event also includes a surrounding market of local vendors selling street food and beverages including grilled cheese, steam buns, hot chocolate and ice cream sandwiches.
Surface is the debut event of Fidget Productions. Founded by Hannah Douglass in 2016, Fidget produces events for the physically and creatively restless. Douglass recently completed her MA in Creative Producing at Central School of Speech and Drama, having previously worked on immersive theatre productions including Heartbreak Hotel (The Jetty, 2016) and Monument (Trafalgar Square, 2016).
