A man was arrested on Sunday following an early morning fire at a disused hostel on Lower Clapton Road.
The 37 year old man was arrested in the vicinity of the building at 2:20 pm, Sunday 5 August, on suspicion of arson and taken to a police station. He has since been bailed to return.
Two people, a man and woman, were rescued from the roof of a porch by fire-fighters, while two men escaped before fire fighters arrived. One of them jumped 25 feet out of a window and is said to be in critical condition at Royal London Hospital. The other man was uninjured.
A fifth person, a male aged 32, was found dead inside the building. It has been confirmed he died of smoke inhalation.
At this stage the fire is being treated as unexplained. LFB (London Fire Brigade) will be carrying out a joint investigation with the Met Police to establish a cause.
Detectives from Hackney are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information on the fire to come forward – please call police on 101; if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
