Showing Love to London Fields – Have your say about BBQs

Hackney council has kicked off a campaign to encourage residents and users of London Fields Park, to treat it with care, respect and to clean up after themselves.

The park sees increased usage during the summer months, not only by locals, but festival goers who attend the various events held at the park throughout summer. But while council staff regularly clean up, the council are encouraging users to do their bit.

Barbecueing which is polpular within the park, has been the bane of park users and the council for years because of the damage disposable BBQs does to the grass.

Hackney Council is trialling a small BBQ area throughout this summer, where people can have a BBQ if they use a stand. Anyone not using a stand will be asked by Council staff to use one or put the BBQ out. BBQ’s will not be permitted outside the designated area, which will be at the South West entrance nearest to Broadway Market. The council will also provide a special metal bin for the disposal of BBQ’s.

During the trial, local residents, park users, the London Fields User Group and anyone else who has a view on the council’s proposals will have the chance to give their views.

The Council also hopes people using the park dispose of their cigarettes, rather than leaving them on the ground and throw recycle metal bottle tops in the cow bins along with bottles and cans.

London Fields park was awarded a Green Flag award in 2010. The Green Flag Award Scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. Hackney currently has twelve Green Flags – one of the highest totals in London.
