Tesco’s has lost their bid to replace the existing store in Morning Lane with a hypermarket, which would have included three, nine and thirteen storey buildings. It would have also included 134 private apartments, offices, 8 retail spaces, bars and restaurants, 252 cycle spaces and 414 car parking.
Although the development was supported by council officers, saying it would regenerate the area, create more jobs and improve the surroundings, it was opposed by groups including The Hackney Historic Buildings Trust
and the Rector of Hackney who feared the high rise building would impose on some of Hackneys open spaces.
