Fire Damages Stoke Newington Shop & Other Units

Six fire engines and 30 fire fighters fought a blaze in a single storey range of buildings including a second hand furniture shop on Marton Road in Stoke Newington, in the early hours of this morning (Friday 12th).

The buildings, including a warehouse and a storage unit, were badly damaged by the blaze. Part of the ground floor in the adjoining property was also damaged by fire. Around 32 people were evacuated from the neighbouring properties as a precaution.

Fire crews from Stoke Newington, Holloway, Kingsland and Islington stations were called at approximately 1:00 am and was under control by 3:30 am.

Local Stoke Newington residents have posted posted on Twitter about seeing several gas canisters in the presumably pulled out by fire fighters and have stated a person was helped out of the second hand shop. They are also reporting the rear of the Gold Bar on Stoke Newington Church Street was gutted, although the interior of the bar was not badly damaged.

Police and Fire investigators are still investigating the cause.
