Do You Remember The Odeon Cinema In Stamford Hill?
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:30:06 AM »

I do.  I would get off the 253 on my way to school, but it was always boarded up, however my mum and dad had their first date there, I'm not sure why since they lived in Islington at the time....I must ask.  Maybe it was the only place showing Imitation Of Life starring Lana Turner  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052918/

Anyone remembers?

I recall the Odeon.. it was the "flash" cinema in the area when I was a kid.  There was also a cinema on the opposite side of the road, the name escapes me, we used to go to the Saturday matinees and boo and cheer for the goodies and baddies;  didn't get to hear much of what was being said.  The 653 ran along Upper Clapton Road to Stamford Bridge back then, I suppose the 253 has replaced it.

Just thinking about my replay.  When I lived there that cinema was called the Regent.  Not sure when it was renamed the Odeon, I have been out of the area since 1959.

653 eh? The 253 and 254 go past there these days. I also believe that flats next to what was the Regent is called Regents court.  It recently became a Sainsbury supermarket after several incarnations of different stores.

Here is a picture of the interior in 1932.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/kencta/4120187481/

I'm not that old  Grin  Much appreciated, although I do not recall the interior, I don't think I was ever in there when the lights were on.

While on the subject of cinemas, I remember acinema in the area that was decorated in the style of a Spancish/Mexican hacienda with an open starry sky painted on the ceiling.  Anyone rember what the cinema was called?

Just looked up Alan Sugar on Wikipedia... he was born three years after me and although he went to the same primary school as I. it is most unlikely that we met at all.
